God is good. But what does that mean—that God is good? The more I studied this in the Bible, the more one central concept seemed to jump out: God’s goodness conveys His generosity. His goodness means far more than His generosity, but it certainly includes His infinitely generous posture toward us. By nature, God longs to bring joy and blessing to all His creatures.In his goodness, God permits what he hates to accomplish what he loves. {For example, He permits crucification to give us salvation.} Ultimately, God is good. God does no harm. God does not withhold good. God is with us in our sufferings. But the key piece in this basic understanding is that our idea of good is not the same as God’s idea of good. Sometimes God uses hardship and tragedy to set the stage for triumph in order to bring about his good plan. When we abide in him, no matter what we face, by the power of His Spirit, his goodness overflows in and through us when we trust that he will use our hurt and our pain for our good and His glory. Ultimately, to abide in God is to connect, believe, trust, receive, remain and rest in Him. It means we find goodness in, through, and from the only one who is GOOD. But it is important to always remember that the goal of abiding is the glory of God. We were designed as the branches who need to abide in the vine in order to bear any good fruit. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.” {John‬ ‭15:1-9‬ ‭ESV‬‬}
